Hazel Grove

Hazel Grove is a small resort outside Fern River near the Preserve, situated just up the road from Heather Beach. The resort is owned and operated by Tati, who lives in an apartment above the lodge. During the busy months Jule helps out part time.

Hazel Grove is a popular place to stay for birdwatchers, bicycle tourists, hot springers, kayakers and out-of-town nudists visiting the beach. The affordable accommodations attract a diversity of lodgers, making the resort feel like a bustling hostel or traveler’s inn.

Guests can choose from three options. Starting with the most rustic, there are 15 campsites spaced throughout the wooded property, each with a tent pad and picnic table. Next are five vintage Airstream trailers, lovingly renovated by Tati and friends, which form a ring around the communal fire pit. People staying in the trailers and campsites share a bathhouse and two composting toilets near the lodge. Lastly, there is a single cozy guest room across the hall from Tati’s apartment.

Tati has a name for each of the Airstreams. She has a soft spot for them — especially number three, Hazel, which she camped her way across the continent in twice during her 30s. The other four are Sun King, Joni, Lovers Loft and Windy.

Lena & Carlos visit the resort often to help Tati with projects and to drink a glass of wine on her balcony. Bri & Liam, with Quinn occasionally in tow, come to stay in Joni a few times throughout the summer. Tati closes the camp for a weekend each September for the Naturist Club’s annual late summer gathering.
